Collaborations and Tours

The queer choral movement continues to grow across the world. As it expands, international collaborations between queer choirs are a fun way for them to share music-making, build community across countries and learn about the queer cultures of regions different from their own. They are also crucial for the gradual development of international solidarity.

Where collaborations are well planned, they can make vital contributions to the activism of the choirs and choruses involved, and this builds our movement as a whole. This work also helps us learn how queer culture defines itself in so many different ways. Choral collaborations can take a variety of forms, and crucial connections can begin from just a handful of singers singing together, in music of any style.

Over the years, the members of the Global Alliance’s Steering Group have facilitated collaborations of many types, large and small. On this webpage, we present a document, which we hope will make such collaborations available to all. It summarizes best practice, simplifies and demystifies the process, and will certainly remind you of some key items and help you avoid a number of pitfalls.

Through a series of workshop chapters and activities, it comprehensively covers everything from scheduling, getting visas and not getting arrested to why it could be a VERY bad idea to put a vibrator in your hand luggage!  It also suggests a number of important respect protocols, that will help your two choirs work together equitably and with cultural sensitivity.
